A national flag is a flag that symbolizes a country.

Types of National Flag

There are three distinct types of national flag for use on land, and three for use at sea, although many countries use identical designs for several (and sometimes all) of these types of flag. National flags at sea are called national ensigns. The types of flag (or ensign) are:

• Civil—the design which citizens generally may display
• State—used officially by government agencies
• War (or Military)—used only by the country's armed forces
