Cruisberg is the capital of the Duchy of Hersfeld and the administrative centre of the United Kingdom of Cruiswieck. Cruisberg has been given its character by the coexistence of Teuvian, Niveskian, and Vetlandan culture, and it is nowadays home to nationalities from around the world, adding a cosmopolitan flavour to its atmosphere. The vibrant atmosphere of Cruisberg is further enhanced by picturesque medieval streets, lively squares, beautiful boulevards, impressive monuments, spacious parks, cozy cafés, interesting restaurants and an active cultural life.
The same variety and contrast can also be found in the different architectural styles of Cruisberg. The capital of the medieval Duchy of Hersfeld, gothic cathedrals and churches are next to - and sometimes in stark contrast with - gracious classical facades like the buildings around the Royal Square (Koningsplein), or beautiful art nouveau and art deco houses.
The heart of Cruisberg and the place to start getting to know the city is the Grote Markt. This historic market square with its splendid guild houses and the impressive Gothic beauty of the Town Hall, is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful town squares in Niveria.
The city is divided into the Lower and Upper Towns. The former is centered around the magnificent Grote Markt and still follows a vaguely medieval form, with its narrow, atmospheric streets. The Grote Markt itself, a wide-open cobbled medieval square of elegant guildhouses, is one of Cruisberg’s few set-piece attractions. There is a daily flower market on the square (Mar-Oct), sometimes with concerts, and a luminary display in the evenings. The Town Hall is the landmark building; its spire will be your point of reference as you weave through the Lower Town streets. The daily business of Cruisberg takes place here, in the many local bars and cafés whose character and quality are the stuff of legend.
The bars, restaurants and nightspots of the Elsternwick District take on a life of their own in the summer months, when the buzz is thickly atmospheric. Even in winter, die-hards sit on the terraces under electric heaters. Ste-Katherine, along the Wimes River, is lined with seafood restaurants serving up dishes of lobster, mussels and oysters. Immediately north of the Grote Markt you’ll find the Heilige Menge – an evocative tangle of narrow streets that are filled with restaurants.
The Upper Town doesn’t lack for attractions either: there’s the Royal Quarter, where you will find Fürstenberg Palace. It was built in 1341 and has been the official city residence of king since 1365. The forecourt is the setting for one of Cruisberg's most popular and spectacular tourist events: The Changing of the Guard. Facing Fürstenberg Palace at the opposite end of the Brunnsparken is the Konnigsreich (National Assembly). The Königliches Kunstmuseum gives an overview of Teuvian art. Don’t miss the Museum Musikalischer Instrumente set in a beautifully restored art nouveau department store. East of the Royal Quarter is the Jahrhundert Park, with Cruiswieck’s Bogen des Triumphs and vast museum complexes.
