Origins

Beliatou has been a political entity at the mouth of the Jakobrieka since the 1200's. The present

state counts its existence from the elevation of Duke Janos Ontumeza to Prince Janosz I of Beliatou in 1262. Since that time it has shifted from Principality to Autocracy, to Principality again, to Parliamentary Republic, to its present Democratic Meritocracy -- differing from a typical parliamentary democracy in detail only.

Janosz tightened control of the Principality -- for decades prior he and his father had been chief among equals of the local dukes, with a 'principality' existing in name only across the lower Jacobrieka. He took the realm from a mere description of the area to a true dynastic sovereign nation, sufficiently integrated to be a counterweight to Santos Emilios to the north and the pre-Zirkaen realms to the south.

Territory

Beliatou today includes both north-bank and south-bank lands -- the south-bank being longer a part of the nation proper. For a time in the 1300's and 1400's the north bank of the Jakobrieka was the Principality of Froninbacher; always closely allied with Beliatou even when independent. After the Association of Haromszeki States briefly unified into the Haromszeki Federal Republic (1451-1454), then dissolved, Beliatou reacquired Froninbacher outright. A number of the tax concessions and enumerated privileges dating to that annexation of the former Froninbacher even today cause friction in Beliatou politics.

The River Zsiskas today forms the republic's border with Zirkae. In the 1200's all the way through the mid-1400's most of present-day southeastern neighbor Svaty Anton was a posession of one or another Zirkaen states, always with the exception of today's Svaty Anton capital, Ste-Dominique. Ste-Dominique as a Bellini posession was an outright separated exclave, with traffic rights along the forty kilometers of connecting roadway being a constant source of disputes with the Zirkaens.
